Choosing Resolution
Business Scanning and Digital Document Services
Choosing a Resolution for Scanning

When we refer to resolution, we are talking about the scan resolution. The term
used to measure scan resolution is SPI (samples per inch) when the scan is
larger file size, and image without losing quality.

Higher resolution scans result in larger file sizes and therefore require more
CD's/DVD's to store these large data files.  We recommend that you select a
resolution based on how you intend to use the digital files. If the images are
only going to be used for online viewing, then the lowest scan resolution will
work the best. If you intend to make large prints from the scans, then you want
to used a high resolution scan as this will give you the best level of quality and
flexibility.

ICE
We use ICE technology on all slides. This helps to remove dust, scratches, and
fingerprints from scanned images. ICE stands for Image Correction and
Enhancement. This process works from within the scanner, during the scanning
process. It is able to remove surface defects but does not remove the detail
content of the image. Scanning with ICE requires the scanner to make an
additional pass.

BIT-DEPTH
We offer two bit depths for color scanning. 8-bits/channel = 24 bit RGB images
and 16-bits/channel = 48 bit RGB images. It is important to note that 16 bit files
are twice the size of 8-bit files and they can be saved as TIFF files only. You may
not be able to see the difference between 8 and 16 bit scans on your monitor,
but high bit-depth images produce more vibrant prints due to the larger color
spectrum achievable.

FILE OPTIONS

TIFF
TIFF files are uncompressed and so they result in the largest file size, but they
also offer the highest level of detail.

JPEG
JPEG files are compressed and so they are more manageable. We save JPEG
files at a very high quality and most people cannot tell the difference between
JPEG and TIFF when compared.

DATA STORAGE
We can store your files to CD's or DVD's. DVD's store about 6.5 times the data a
CD does. You need to have a DVD drive on your computer to open files stored
on a DVD. Your projects will be saved to CD's unless you request DVD or we
recommend DVD due to the size of the project.
